Everything we recommend, on one map: pubs, restaurants and takeaways, farm shops and supermarkets, days out with children, National Trust houses, and the useful things such as the vet and the nearest hospital.

Turville, the village below Cobstone windmill, has stood in for more fictional England than almost anywhere: The Vicar of Dibley, Midsomer Murders and the ITV production of Cranford were all filmed within a quarter of an hour of the CL.

So were a fair number of films: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, 101 Dalmatians, The Monuments Men, Goodnight Mister Tom, Hyde Park on Hudson and Nanny McPhee among them.

The surrounding villages are unusually well supplied: ordinary country pubs, gastropubs, a couple of Michelin-starred kitchens and several farm shops, all inside twenty minutes. Thame holds a farmers market every week, and Laceys sells some of the best cream and milk you will ever taste.

Rebellion Brewery at Marlow runs free beer tasting every day, which is a fine reason to go and look at the river afterwards.

Red kites were reintroduced to southern England in these woods in the 1990s and have thrived since. They are overhead almost constantly. If you do not see one during your stay we will refund your pitch fee, an offer we have never yet had to honour.

Fallow deer come onto the CL at night for the mown grass. There are barn owls in two boxes on the farm and several badger setts in the woods. Dusk on the edge of the field is time well spent.
